Submit for the Next Quarterly Newsletter

In December, Trinity will be releasing the next issue of our physical, quarterly newsletter. As before, we’ll list upcoming events at Trinity, news from our community, thoughts from Pastor Will, and art from our neighbors.

We’re seeking seeking submissions of your art, poetry, or local events to highlight. We’ll have a children’s corner as well, so all ages are encouraged to submit.

Please submit art/name ideas to office@trinitylowereastside.org by November 26.

Welcome, children!

Here at Trinity, children are a valued part of our community and we are delighted to welcome them to worship! There's a special area just for kids under the skylight with books, activity pages, and crayons. Every other Sunday, children gather in the Community Room for Sunday School, beginning at 11:00. Sunday School concludes in time for kids to join adults for Holy Communion. Through the end of 2025, Sunday school will meet on Nov 9, Nov. 23, and Dec 7.

AN INTRODUCTION TO GENESIS

This summer's Introduction to the Bible continues in November with an introduction to the book of Genesis. We'll gather at the end of coffee hour for an introductory study of the first book of the Bible, including a study of its major themes and stories.

We'll be offering a series of newcomer's orientations where you'll have a chance to learn about our congregation's history, mission, and ministries, and some basics of the Lutheran tradition. NOVEMBER 26, 6-8PM: CRAFT NIGHT

Let's hang out and craft! If you knit, crochet, cross-stich, sew, block print, collage, animate, make zines, compose music, have a passion for doodling, or make anything in any way, bring it to the church, and we'll be makers together! The aim here is simply to have fun making things and connecting with each other!

ADVENT BOOK STUDY

Each Wednesday in Advent, beginning December 3, we will gather at 6:30pm in the parsonage for a study of Barbara Brown Taylor's New York Times bestseller An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith.

Described by Phyllis Tickle as "the most completely beautiful book in religion I have read in a very long time,” Taylor explores how she learned to find God beyond the church walls by embracing the sacred as a natural part of everyday life.

At 8:00, we will gather in the sanctuary for Holden Evening Prayer, which all are welcome to attend - the perfect pause in your week to focus on the season of Advent!

SO YOU WANNA WRITE A NOVEL

A WORKSHOP BY SAL VITALE, DEC. 6

Trinity Council Member, Sal Vitale, has published two novels. On December 6th, Sal will give a talk entitled “So, You Wanna Write a Novel”. Sal will describe his experiences and offer advice to folks who may be thinking about writing their own great American novel.

He’ll read excerpts from his second novel, Project Franklin, and offer signed copies for $20...all proceeds to be
donated to Trinity.

DECEMBER 9, 6:30PM: TEA-OLOGY

In the spirit of something like pub theology or theology on tap, if either of those names ring a bell for you, tea-ology will be a time to be together and chat about theology (God-talk)! (You don't have to be a tea-drinker---any safe beverage that suits your fancy is totally welcome!)

There will be no wrong answers, very few right answers at all (if any), no judgment, and lots of questions!!! This is a space to wonder, to practice curiosity, to engage honestly with our faith, and to open ourselves up to God and each other. Bring your questions, your doubts, your wonderings, your humor---in other words, your whole and real self!

We'll meet at the church for this first tea-ology, and then we'll brainstorm other spaces in the neighborhood that could be well-suited for this kind of gathering.

"The Gospel of Resistance and Resilience"

Advent Lutheran Church is hosting a worship gathering called The Gospel of Resistance and Resilience. The Gospel of Resistance and Resilience takes place monthly. Advent describes this gathering as "a musically-driven, reflective, love-rooted, community-building, questioning, Gospel-centered gathering." You can find more info at adventnyc.org/thegatheringnyc.

Soil and Sabbath - and Other Small Groups

This fall we are again joining up with other Lutheran congregations in Manhattan for a series of small groups, offering you a chance to build community with other Lutherans while exploring faith with a variety of topics. Vicar Nick will be leading a group called Soil and Sabbath:

This small group will ask questions together about how we live in relationship to soil and how we live in relationship to Sabbath, the ancient once-a-week communal spiritual practice of intentional rest, delight, and wonder. Those questions will lead to more questions about racial capitalism, the accelerating pace of modern life, ecological justice, disability justice, and how we interact with each of those things.

Ultimately, we’ll ask what practices and ways of life can nurture vitality and justice in the church and world. The goal of this small group is to create our own personal soil-and-Sabbath practices for ourselves, and to find out together what happens to and in us as we give our attention to soil and Sabbath. This is an asynchronous small group, and everything will be communicated through WhatsApp.
